Residual National Identification Registration (NIR) of older persons begins across the Country

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in partnership with the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA), with support from the Social Protection Platform Uganda (SPPU) have embarked on a countrywide residual registration of older persons who are 75 years and above who had missed the previous national registration outreaches. The exercise comes at a time when it is now a requirement for one to have a national ID, in order to access Government services and Programmes including SAGE and the National Special Grant for Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, banks are required to use the NIN to open individual accounts yet most government grants are delivered to beneficiaries through a bank account. For the Senior Citizens Grant, beneficiaries access the grant through Centenary Rural Development Bank, the payment service provider for the Programme.

The exercise, which begun on February 15^th 2022, will allow over 41,000 older persons who have never registered for a national ID to do so and those that have since lost their IDs, to access their NINs from the NIRA office. Additionally, NIRA will also issue out IDs to older persons that registered but did not collect their physical cards.

CERUDEB will deliver SAGE payments in all Districts from 7th March – June 2022

SAGE beneficiary payments are taking place in all districts of the Country from 7^th /03/2022. All beneficiaries and their helpers convening at paypoints are strongly reminded to observe SOPs set to combat spread of COVID 19.

Senior Citizens who attained 80 years and are registered with NIRA but missed previous enrolments will also be verified and enrolled into the Programme.

More information on requirements and plans can be acquired from Parish Chiefs, Community development officers, Senior CDOs in charge of SAGE, office of the CAO in each District, or from respective Regional Offices of Kyenjojo, Gulu, Moroto, Nebbi, Kaberemaido, Kamuli, Kiboga, Kampala, Mbarara and Mbale.

Development Partners Provide Equipment to Boost SAGE Implementation

The Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and Irish have delivered vehicles, motorcycles, computers and accessories to support the implementation of social protection interventions under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. The Development Partners have supported the SAGE since inception in 2010, when the Programme was piloted in 15 districts namely; Amudat, Apac, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kiboga, Kole, Kyankwanzi, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Napak, Nebbi, Yumbe and Zombo. The Programme has since evolved and now covers all districts across the country, benefiting over 304,555 older persons who receive Ug.Shs25,000 per month, to mitigate various forms of vulnerability.
